LEXINGTON, KY (KFVS) -

A Paducah police officer received two awards at the fifth annual Governor’s Occupant Protection Awards ceremony Tuesday in Lexington.

Officer Melissa Dillon led the PPD during this year’s counting period in issuing citations for seat belt and child restraint violations. She wrote 419 such citations between June 11, 2014, and June 10, 2015.

In addition, she wrote more seat belt and child restraint violation citations than any other officer state-wide in similar-sized agencies – 51-150 officers – earning her the award for Division 2.

More than 120 law enforcement officers from 103 agencies across the Commonwealth were honored at the awards ceremony Tuesday. The ceremony was sponsored by the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts, when worn correctly, are proven to reduce the risk of fatal injuries to front-seat occupants by 45 percent – and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans. Also according to NHTSA, a properly installed, belt-positioning booster seat lowers the risk of injury to children by nearly 60 percent, compared with seat belts alone.
