Groups push for ATV safety regulations

(KFVS/AP) -

Some consumer groups are calling for stricter safety laws for ATV's in Illinois.

The Chicago Tribune reports Illinois has no rules on rider age, helmet use, number of riders or safety certification.

The Consumer Federation of America says there were 528 ATV-related deaths nationally last year. Ten of them, including one child, were in Illinois.

The statistics have led to a push for things such as age restrictions and helmet requirements.

Others say better-regulated trails would keep riders safer because they would have to follow park rules.

Jim Jarvis owns Cycletech Vintage Cycles in Carbondale, and says that while he disagrees with more regulations, parents should be teaching kids how to ride safely.

“If you don’t have any sort of adult supervision or training, you can get hurt pretty easily… and education starts at the home." Jarvis explained.

The Specialty Vehicle Institute suggests wearing protective gear and supervision for riders under 16.
