PEMISCOT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

No charges have been filed after an 11-year-old girl was shot while riding with her family on Interstate 55 on July 25.

The girl was released from the hospital Sunday.

Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell says the department received a call from a hospital in Blytheville, Ark. Saturday evening, saying a child was taken to their emergency room, and had a gunshot wound to the neck.

The family said it occurred on Interstate 55 near the 2 mile marker in Missouri.

Deputies contacted the family at the hospital.

The family, from Kirksville, Mo., was on vacation, traveling south on I-55, when they say the driver’s door window suddenly 'blew out'.

The family said they first assumed that heat was the cause, but their daughter, who was in the back seat, began complaining of pain in her neck.

It was then determined she had been shot with a 9 mm round.

The family told authorities they saw nothing, and have no idea who shot at them.

Evidence gathered at the scene suggests that the shot came from a north-bound vehicle also traveling on I-55.

The victim was flown to LeBonuer Childrens Hospital in Memphis, where she was expected to undergo surgery.

Sheriff Greenwell said the girl was released from the hospital Sunday morning and the family has continued on their trip.

Deputies have been contacted by an individual who was shooting his pistol Saturday afternoon around the same time the victim was shot.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the area where the person was shooting could possibly line up with the location of the incident.

Two pistols were turned over to deputies for ballistics test to be done by a crime lab.

Officials say they have received no other reports of similar events.

Anyone with any information concerning this incident is asked to contact the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office at 573-333-4101 or the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
