Full Throttle: Cape Girardeau's new police cars can fly

You may have noticed a new look for police cars in Cape Girardeau.

Cape Girardeau PD is hitting the streets with some new cars that look different on the outside, but it's what's inside that has officers singing their praises.

A couple of months on the job now and these new Chargers are impressing the officers who are driving them.

"I've been doing this 20 years," said Sgt. Darren Estes. "And this is by far the best police unit I've ever driven."

For Estes, his police unit is his office on wheels. A state of the art crime fighting machine.

"We work 12 hour shifts and we need a car that is comfortable and does what we want it to do," Estes said.

Under the hood is a Hemi V8 with close to 400 horsepower. The cars are all wheel drive to help in winter months, and this car was designed to do police work.

It has a heavy duty suspension and heavy duty brakes. Inside, a computer, GPS and internet. But it's what it can do on the road that really impresses.

So, why is it important for police cars to have good performance?

According to Estes, it's all about getting there as safely as possible and as quickly as possible. And let's face it, any car that performs well is a good time, police car or not.

Cape Girardeau Police Chief Wes Blair let the officers decide on the look of the new units. They chose the black and white graphics that you will see patrolling the streets.
