Heartland veteran responds to Trump, McCain controversy

Trump, McCain controversy

(KFVS) - Donald Trump is refusing to apologize for saying John McCain is not a war hero because he was captured.

Trump made the statement over the week.

McCain spent five years as a Vietnam POW.

We talked to a Heartland veteran about this story.

Harry Dryer served as a sonar technician in the Navy during Vietnam. He called Trump's comments offensive, inflammatory and disrespectful.

"Donald Trump has never worn a uniform. Never served. Documents reveal that he got several deferments and show that he was deemed physically unable to serve, which goes against what he has said, which is he had a high draft number," Dryer said.

Trump is being widely criticized for these comments, and not just by veterans.

Senator McCain has said Trump should apologize to all veterans and POWs for his comments. So far, that has not happened.
