JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

An Elkville, Illinois man faces a long list of charges accused of a string of illegal activity late Sunday night.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says at about 10:30 p.m. deputies responded to reports of a man trying to fight with patrons outside the Vets tavern in Dowell.

Witnesses say Grant D. Choate threw chairs and bricks at several people, and hit one person in the head with a shovel, before he unsuccessfully tried to steal two vehicles.

Deputies report when a first responder stopped at the scene to render aid to the victim of the shovel attack, Choate stole the first responder's vehicle and drove away.

Officers tracked Choate to the Casey's Convenience store in Elkville, where they say he was pumping gas into the stolen car. When Choate saw the police cruisers approach, deputies say he drove off again, tearing the nozzle and hose out of the gas pump and hitting another vehicle in the Casey's parking lot as he left.

Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies chased Choate south on U.S. Highway 51 for several miles, trying to get him to stop.

Carbondale Police joined in the pursuit when Choate entered the city limits.

Investigators say Choate turned a street corner too fast during the chase, and hit a Carbondale Police car head-on.

That's when officers were finally able to arrest Choate, and take him into custody.

Police are still investigating, and have not yet released the name or status of the Carbondale Police officer involved in the crash, or the victim hit in the head with a shovel.
