1 dead in KY truck crash, troopers investigating auto theft

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The Kentucky State Police are investigating a collision that left one man dead, injured another and allegedly involved a stolen vehicle.

KSP responded to a single vehicle collision near the intersection of KY 94 and US 45 in Water Valley at approximately 09:32 P.M. on Saturday, July 18, 2015.

An investigation shows Phillip C. Bynum, 44, of Water Valley, Ky., was operating a 2001 Chevrolet pick-up, traveling west on KY 94. 

For an unknown reason, Bynum failed to stop at the intersection.

The vehicle went off the roadway and struck a house, where it caught fire.   

The driver was pronounced dead on the scene by the Graves County Coroner’s Office. 

Zachary L. Bynum, 21, of Water Valley, Ky., was a passenger and was air lifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. for his injuries. 

A second passenger, Nathan K. Buchanan, 19, of Hickman, Ky., fled the scene on foot. 

Buchanan was later transported to The Med in Memphis, Tn. for his injuries.

During the collision investigation, KSP discovered the pickup truck had been stolen earlier in the night.

Kentucky State Police was assisted at the scene by the Graves County Sheriff’s Department, Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, Hickman County Sheriff’s Department, Graves County Coroner’s Office, Mayfield Graves EMS, Hickman County EMS, Tri-City EMS, Water Valley Fire Department, Wingo Fire Department, Graves Fire Rescue, and Hickman County Rescue Department. 

Trooper Paul Hale is continuing the collision investigation and the stolen vehicle investigation is ongoing by Trooper Johnson Gordon.
