2-year-old drowns in Ewing, IL pool

EWING, IL (KFVS) -

A two-year-old boy drowned Saturday after the gate to his family pool in Ewing, Illinois was left unlatched.

The Jefferson County coroner Eddie Marks said two year old Ryan Russell reportedly was out of his mother's sight for just five minutes.

The family had a proper sized fence and gate surrounding the family pool, according to Marks.

But the fence gate was left unlatched, allowing the toddler to walk through.

Russell's mother found him unresponsive in the pool at their Ewing, Illinois home.

She performed CPR, but it was too late.

A Franklin County Sheriff's deputy was called to the scene at 4:14 p.m.

Russell was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Jefferson County coroner said autopsy results show the official cause of death as accidental death by drowning.

No foul play is suspected.
