Massac Co. businesses, organizations team up for back to school event

METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

More than 500 students received back to school supplies Thursday at the Metropolis Community Center.

Kids getting ready for back to school in Massac County got a huge boost from their community.

Several local businesses and organizations joined forces to provide children with haircuts, dental checks, and vaccinations along with pencils, notebooks, and rulers.

"Beginning a new school year can be very stressful for both kids and parents," said Chad Lewis from Harrah's Metropolis, one of the event sponsors. "Our goal for this event is to make sure we help alleviate the stress and make their school year enjoyable."

Children will take priority and will be allowed to go to the front of the line to pick up needed supplies.

Dental Safari Company offered exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants at no cost to parents.

Southern Seven Health Department offered vaccinations for those with medical cards and who are private pay.

Along with the supplies and services offered, local salons and barbers are donated 600 free haircuts.

"I'm particularly excited to see some of the local salons and barbers who didn't hesitate to jump on board by offering their talents and services," Lewis added.

Along with Harrah's Metropolis, other sponsors include Reed Electric, Silver Collections, Liberty Utilities, The Metropolis Planet, Dental Safari, MCDAC, Southern Seven Health Department, Palmer & Co. Barber Shop, Kelly's Mane Image, and Creative Trends Salon.

The school supplies were collected through fund raising and donations.
