WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) - You could call it a "labor of love." During the coldest months of the year, many children in southern Illinois wouldn't have a warm coat to wear if it wasn't for the caring work of a bunch of laborers.
For the past 24 years, the Egyptian Building Trades Council has been quietly raising money behind the scenes to provide coats for kids who need them.
To raise money for this winter, the Council is hosting it's 24th annual golf outing.
The scramble will be on Monday, July 27, at the Franklin County Country Club, just south of West Frankfort. Morning and afternoon sessions are planned.
Over the past 20-plus years nearly 10,000 children have been given warm coats and other items to get them through the winter.
Coats for Kids has raised more than half a million dollars in that time.
The program helps kids in a 17 county area in southern Illinois.
In late fall, teachers in schools make requests for their students in need and then go shopping for them.
