Cairo man sentenced to 30 years in shooting death of wife

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

A man accused of shooting and killing his wife in 2013 was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

A clerk at the Alexander County Courthouse confirms that Chauncey Hughes, Jr. received a 30 year sentence and three years supervised parole after his sentencing Wednesday.

A mistrial was declared in Hughes' murder trial on August 22, 2014. This was for the shooting death of his wife.

Hughes was facing murder/intent to injure charges. A plea deal was reached and the murder/intent to injure charge was amended/reduced.

Cairo police responded to a home on 35th street in November 2013.

Officers found 22-year-old Heather Davis inside with a gunshot wound.
