EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, IL (KFVS) -

East Cape Girardeau does not have a police department, for now.

The village board voted 5-1 at a meeting on Tuesday evening to fire William Gibson as police chief, effective immediately.

The Alexander County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Police will provide police assistance while the city looks for a new police chief.

Gibson said this comes just a month after he was promoted, given vacation time and told he was doing a good job.

He was a full time officer who recently went from hourly to salary. He was with the department for about a year.

East Cape Girardeau Mayor Joe Aden said the firing is a personnel matter and cannot comment.

Aden said he will start the process of looking for a new police chief. He hopes to get the position filled as soon as possible.
