Group announced they support IDOT, 'Shawnee Expressway'

(KFVS) -

A group looking to expand and improve transportation opportunities announced they support the Illinois Department of Transportation's decision to move forward on the new "Shawnee Expressway."

The Transamerica Corridor Corporation announced they support IDOT's decision to repurpose funds designated for a study to connect Interstate 24 in Paducah with Interstate 55 in Missouri to a new study that will connect Cape Girardeau directly to Interstate 57 in Illinois.

IDOT announced their intentions on Thursday.

The new "Shawnee Expressway" would connect the intersection of Illinois State Highway 3 and Illinois State Highway 146 to Interstate 57. The new road will be about 18 miles in length. It would provide an east-west connection in extreme southern Illinois and provide for interconnectivity between major north/south routes Interstate 57 and Interstate 55.

The project would reduce travel time from Cape Girardeau to Interstate 57 to about 25 minutes and reduce travel time to Paducah to a little more than an hour.
