Cape Girardeau police preparing to move to new station

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The police department is preparing to pack up their things and head to a new building.

According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, they have outgrown their current building located on Sprigg Street.

The department has plans to move to the old Navy Reserve building next to Arena Park.

Steve Penny, owner of Penn-Tech Electronics located next to police department, said he hopes the department plans to still have viability in the area around the old station.

"If they do move across town, they need to have some type of presence on this side of town," Penny said. "This part of town has a few problems. What they used to have before is substations in the problem area and I think they need to follow suit with what they had before. I don't think they should just abandon the whole neighborhood."

The police department said substations are currently not in the plan, but will consider that an option.

We also spoke with Molly Hood, assistant city manager, and she said this development is far from complete.

She said they are looking into building repairs and other cost that may be a factor in moving the department.
