Weakley Co. deputies respond to murder, suicide

WEAKLEY COUNTY, TN (KFVS) -

The Weakley County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a woman shot by her husband on Friday, June 26.

According to the sheriff's department, they received a 911 call at 11:58 a.m. at 950 Highway 431 between Martin and the Obion County line. The caller reported a woman had been shot by her husband near the back of their house.

The caller also reported that the husband then went into the home and was armed.

Deputies say they arrived at 12:04 p.m.

After failing to reach the husband by phone, deputies say tear gas was fired into the house. When they went inside, they say they found the husband had shot and killed himself with the same 9mm handgun used to shoot his wife.

Alexandria Bevis, 27, and James C. Bevis, 32, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say Alexandria Bevis had been shot several times.

According to the sheriff's department, two small children were on the home's front porch at the time of the shooting, but were carried to safety by Alexandria Bevis' mother before deputies arrived.

The sheriff's department was assisted by the Martion Police Department, Martin Fire Department, Weakley County Emergency Medical Services and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
