New Madrid teacher, coach remembered in memorial service

NEW MADRID, MO (KFVS) - The New Madrid Community is remembering one of their own who recently lost her battle with cancer.

Jackie Vaughn passed away on June 19.

Her family said she always wanted to help in unique ways.

And she even did so in death by donating her body to science.

So on Thursday friends and family honored her in a different way.

Hundreds came to Jackie's memorial service at the Davis Street softball field.

She was an avid sports fan, always there to cheer on the home team.

And now the city has decided to make her a permanent fixture renaming the field the "Jackie Vaughn Memorial Field."

Jackie dedicated 37 years of her life teaching in the classroom and became an impactful presence in many lives.

"She'll be remembered as a mom, as a mom to everyone she met," said granddaughter Alexa Garner. "She was an inspiration to everyone she met. She was just amazing. and I'm really gonna miss her."

The crowd braved the heat to release hundreds of balloons in her honor.
