CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Local students Megan Dammerman and Dalton Barnhill represented Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative in Washington, D.C., during the annual "Youth to Washington" Tour, June 12-19.
This event is an introduction for rural youth to democratic form of government and the cooperative business model.
Barnhill traveled as a "Willie Wiredhand" student; a program where students can raise their own funds to pay for the trip.
Dammerman and Barnhill met with Congressman Mike Bost and were among 65 rural Illinois youth leaders selected for the trip.
The students joined more than 1,660 young leaders from across the country from 44 states.
In addition to the Capitol, they got to visit numerous local museums and historical sites.
Sophomores and juniors in high schools that are within the service area of Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative are eligible to participate in the annual program.
