Suspect in East. St. Louis officer-involved shooting identified, search still on

EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KFVS) - Illinois State Police report an officer involved shooting took place near 1-255 and State Street in East St. Louis on June 23, 2015 around 11:30 p.m.

Charges have been filed and warrants issued for Gregory K. Nelson, 52, of East St. Louis.

Nelson is wanted for attempted first degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of weapons by a felon. He is believed to be in the East St. Louis area.

Police say Nelson is considered armed and dangerous.

The incident happened when a trooper pulled the driver over for a field sobriety test on the northbound ramp to I-255 from State Street after suspecting the driver was driving while intoxicated.

According to Illinois State Police, sometime while the suspect, Nelson, was outside of the vehicle, Nelson pulled out a gun and fired at the trooper.

The Trooper then returned fire and Nelson ran away.

Nelson is described as a black man wearing dark colored clothing and was last seen running south-southeast from the scene.

The Trooper was not hurt, but it is still unknown if Nelson was hit by the gunshot.

Anyone with information on Nelson's location is asked to call the Illinois State Police at 618-346-3990 or your local law enforcement agency. If it is an emergency situation, dial 911.
