Funeral services announced for teen killed after ATV crash in Franklin Co.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - An ATV crash in Franklin County claimed a young life and sent another to the hospital.

A 911 call came into the Franklin County Sheriff's Department around 9 p.m. Saturday regarding an ATV accident involving two males.

According to Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler, 29-year-old Abraham Romero and 14-year-old Sergio Mendez were riding an ATV on Number 10 Road West of Logan when they struck a tree that had fallen across the road.

Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Romero was transported to Franklin Hospital with unknown injuries. Romero is a relative of Mendez.

Leffler says neither Mendez nor Romero were wearing helmets.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.

Sergio Mendez was a Benton Consolidated High School student, and a member of the cheerleading squad at the high school.

Visitation for Mendez will be Wednesday, June 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton, Ill. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery.
