DEXTER, MO (KFVS) -

The First Christian Church in Dexter, Missouri held a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. on Thursday in response to the shooting in Charleston, S.C.

This is in conjunction with the Dexter Ministerial Alliance.

The church is located at 224 E. Stoddard Street.

The informal service was open to the public, with clergy from different denominations who spoke.

They prayed for the victims and community of Charleston.

As one woman in attendance said, "it comes down to this we are Christians and we are Americans."

Those two simple truths connect communities across the country as they grieve the actions of the lone gunman. Now clergy said it's time to tackle the deeper issues that motivate such heinous acts.
