MSHP: 6 people die across MO in Memorial Day Weekend traffic crashes

MISSOURI (KFVS) -

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says six people died in traffic crashes over the 2015 Memorial Day weekend.

Between 6 p.m. on Friday, May 22 and 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 25, they highway patrol said they investigated 298 traffic crashes, which included 98 injuries and five of the deadly crashes.

Troopers also arrested 105 people for driving while intoxicated.

Of the five deadly crashes, one was in the Weldon Springs area and two each happened in the Springfield area and Poplar Bluff area.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, three people died in crashes on Saturday, May 23. George D. Jenkins, 49, of Fredericktown, Mo., died when the motorcycle he was riding failed to negotiate a curve and crossed the center part of the road into the path of a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle got minor injuries in the crash. It happened in Madison County on County Road 209, just west of Missouri Route OO.

Teddie R. Marrs, 75, of Pineville, Mo., died when the vehicle he was a passenger in drove into the path of a second vehicle. Marrs was pronounced dead at the hospital. The crash happened in McDonald County on U.S. Highway 71, 2 miles north of Jane, Mo.

Albert J. Begley, 30, of Advance, Mo., died when the vehicle he was driving traveled off the road, became airborne and hit a creek embankment. Begley was pronounced dead at a Cape Girardeau hospital. The crash happened in Cape Girardeau County on Missouri Route K, 1 mile east of Gordonville, Mo.

The highway patrol said one death happened on Sunday, May 24. Levi F. Wheeler, 30, of Villa Ridge, Mo., died when the vehicle he was a passenger in traveled off the road, hit a tree and caught fire. Wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle had serious injuries. Troopers say it is unknown whether or not Wheeler or the driver were wearing seat belts. The crash happened in Franklin County on Brinkman Road near St. Mary's Road.

Two deaths happened on Monday, May 25. Vicki L. Paulus, 58, of Republic, Mo., died with the motorcycle she was riding traveled off the road and hit a tree. Paulus was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened in Christian County on Logan Ridge Road, 9 miles south of Ozark, Mo.

William R. Rogers, 92, died when troopers say he drove into the path of another vehicle while trying to cross the highway. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened on U.S. Highway 54 at County Road 306.

According to the highway patrol, there were zero boating deaths over the weekend. Troopers investigated six boating crashes, involving one injury. There were no drownings.

Troopers arrested 15 people for boating while intoxicated.
