2 suspects ID'd, Another suspect unknown after attack on SIU campus

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Two suspects have been identified and police are looking for another suspect after a Southern Illinois University student was attacked at a residence hall on May 8.

Police say the female victim sustained minor injuries after she was attacked by three people in her room Friday evening, but she was treated and released.

The altercation happened just before nightfall in Neely Hall on the East side of campus.

The victim reported that her cell phone had been taken.

Police have identified two female suspects. One of the suspects was a student, according to SIU - Carbondale Police. The other is not affiliated with the university. Police are still working to identify a third suspect.

Police believe all the suspects are out of the Carbondale area.

Freshman Logan Kent who lives in Neely hall says although she sees reports of similar incidents on a regular basis, her belief is the incidents reflect the individuals involved, as opposed to the campus as a whole.

“Generally I do feel really safe here on campus” Kent stated on Saturday, “I feel like dangerous situations are something that happen often across all college campuses ... but it's definitely incredibly unsettling just to know that something so serious happens often, and so close to home… because this is our home.”

According to the US Department of Education's website, there's an average of eight cases of aggravated assault every year in the residence halls at SIU.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety at 618-453-3771.
