Costly repairs for Du Quoin's pool may cause opening delay

DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) - City leaders say the Du Quoin municipal pool is more than 30 years old, and starting to show of its age.

"It has been developing cracks and seals that are failing to where in this case," Mayor Rex Duncan said. "Normally we would try and keep that pool full, but it has drained completely."

The pool usually opens Memorial Day weekend, but due to all the repairs that need to be done, city leaders say a delay in opening might occur.

"The challenge is frankly, as with everything in local government, it's one with money and resources to either repair the pool," Mayor Duncan said. "Or worst case scenario, we would have to replace it."

Resident and parent, Michlle Bloomfield says she hopes a delay won't happen.

"The pool is really the only thing there is to do during the summer, especially on weekends when it's only a quarter to get in," Duncan said. "So for the community, I don't think it should get delayed opening just because that's the only thing our kids have to do besides going to the park."

City leaders say with repair costs looking to be between $20-30,000 to repair the pool, and more than $1.5 million to replace it, it would be a major capital investment.

"You have to weigh it against other city priorities,  the core priorities of the city," Mayor Duncan said. "Police, fire, streets, viable water and sewer systems. Those are core functions of the city. So when you budget and when you allocate resources, that has to be done with first attention to those core missions"
