CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Car crashes, condemned buildings and serious injuries are all things that emergency crews experience on a daily basis.

On Thursday, some medical students at SIUC learned that first-hand.

It was part of the final exam for advanced first-aid students at SIUC.

The university welcomed six professional departments to help out with the drill, and simulate a disaster scenario.

Volunteers were color coded based on the severity of their injuries.

Teachers and volunteers were videotaping the exercise and will critique students next week.

"It helps us to be more prepared when it happens and not be so nervous,” said Emmanuelle Soares, an SIUC student. “Because here we can make errors, we can make all of those mistakes here"

Around 30 students took part in the simulation.
