WICKLIFFE, KY (KFVS) -

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the US 51 Ohio River Cairo bridge is back open. It had been closed at the request of the US Coast Guard.

A barge hit one of the piers on Thursday.

An inspector determined just before noon that there was no structural damage to the bridge.

The road has reopened to traffic.

According to the US Coast Guard, the Motor Vessel Arthur E. Snyder was pushing five empty barges when a gust of wind pushed the tow into a pier around 10 a.m.

The crew reported what appeared to be a scrape on the pier.

The barge that came into contact with the pier had what was described as a telephone pole sized dent.

The impact snapped some of the cables that secured the barges.

The Wildlife-Cairo Bridge carries US 51, US 60, and US 62 traffic across the Ohio River at US 51 Kentucky mile point 7.372.
