SIUC to host mock disaster drill

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Students in an advanced first aid class at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will test their knowledge during a mock disaster drill on Thursday.

About 20 students must show what they would do if a building were to collapse because of a gas explosion.

Other participants in the event will include personnel from the Carbondale Fire Department, the Jackson County Ambulance Service, SIU's Department of Public Safety and the volunteer Jackson County Medical Corps.

Peggy Wilken, the assistant clinical professor of health education, uses this scenario to test students on what they have learned during the semester.

Students will be expected to locate and treat disaster "victims" suffering from burns, crushing, laceration and other injuries that would be found in a real disaster.

The students will become certified emergency medical responders when they past the test.
