Household chemical collection event in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Do you have batteries, paint, fluorescent bulbs or other waste you'd like to get rid of?

You know you can't just throw it in the trash. That's why Jackson County, Illinois is hosting a household chemical collection event on May 30.

Items accepted include: paint, paint thinner, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, poisons, pool chemicals, old gasoline, adhesives, aerosol products, polishes, motor oil, solvents, antifreeze, degreasers, rechargeable batteries, mercury, thermometers, thermostats and old medications in original packaging.

You may not drop off explosives, ammunition, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, propane tanks, medical waste, radioactive material, alkaline batteries, fireworks, tires, electronics, appliances, syringes or controlled substances.

The event is open to Jackson County, Illinois residents only.

You must show a valid state ID or recent utility bill. No business, agricultural, industrial or government wastes are accepted. Do not bring in empty paint or oil containers, you can throw those away in your regular trash.

Take your items to the Southern Illinois Airport on Saturday, May 30 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Call prior to the day if you have containers larger than five gallons in size.
