SIUC holds workshops on first generation college students

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

At Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, roughly 47 percent are first generation college students.

Professional development workshops started this week to engage faculty and staff on how to support the needs of these students.

SIU is one of seven universities that was picked by the Suder Foundation for a first-generation support program.

Administrators say it's to help students who didn't have parents that graduated college, a chance to get fully acclimated to university life.

With these workshops, administrators say it's an opportunity that will allow faculty and staff to help educate these students in more ways than one.

“If you were the first in your family and you represent something more than yourself, it's more than just shifting your socio-economic status,” faculty member, Dr. Mark Amos said. “You can actually make a larger change in yourself and that's a really exciting possibility. And that's why we need a program like this one.”

Officials say The Suder Foundation will use these professional development workshops to widen its influence and support for first-generation college students.

The last professional development workshop is Wednesday for faculty members in the Morris library.
