Third graders learn importance of saving for higher education

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel made a special stop at Clippard Elementary in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on Tuesday, May 5.

Zweifel talked to third grade classes about the importance of saving money for higher education.

This is one stop of many elementary schools Zweifel is visiting across Missouri in the month of May.

Zweifel feels it's important for children to start thinking early about saving money for higher education.

The third graders at Clippard seemed interested and had plenty of great questions for Zweifel, including a question from a student who asked "why is college so expensive?"

Zweifel feels these third graders were very attentive and interested about how to start saving for their future.

Along with this visit, Zweifel also wanted to mention a MOST 529 contest that people can take part in to help jump start their savings for higher education.

This contest awards the grand prize winner $5,290 and awards ten additional prize winners $529.

MOST 529 is a tax-advantaged program that enables families to save for their child's higher education.

Investments in the plan can be used towards many qualified higher education expenses including tuition, certain room and board expenses, books and mandatory fees at most four-year colleges and universities, two-year institutions, vocational schools and more.
