SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

Sikeston Department of Public Safety's K-9 Levi has a new bullet and stab protective vest.

We met Levi and his partner Frankie Adams in Sikeston on Tuesday so we could show you his new ballistic vest.

Adams said it just makes sense for his partner to be as protected as he is.

Nationwide charity, Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc., raised more than $11,000 through their 2015 calendar sales. The charity provides vests for law enforcement dogs who are in need. More than 1300 calendars were distributed throughout the United States which featured K-9s in several states.

Each vest costs $950 and has a five year warranty. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies in providing the body armor for their four legged K-9 officers. Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. provided more than 1359 law enforcement dogs in 49 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of more than $1.2 million.

New K-9 graduates as well as K-9s with expired vests are eligible to participate. The program is open to law enforcement dogs who are US employed, certified and at least 19 months of age.Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. is selling “Hog Wild for K-9s” t-shirt online for a $15 donation at www.vik9s.org. Proceeds will provide bullet and stab protective vests, for police dogs actively working without the potentially lifesaving equipment.
