McCracken Co. deputy fired after accidental shooting involving mother

CARLISLE COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

A McCracken County sheriff's deputy has been fired, according to the sheriff's department.

On Monday, May 11, Deputy Cory Golightly was fired due to departmental policy infractions, including the departmental policy on the use and handling of weapons.

According to the sheriff's department, on Saturday, May 2 it was reported that an off-duty officer had an accidental weapon discharge in Bardwell, Ky.

The officer, Golightly, was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

On Friday, May 8, a preliminary report was provided by the Carlisle County Sheriff's Office to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department for review. Information from that report, as well as statements from Golightly, were considered as part of the investigation.

McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said Deputy Cory Golightly was involved in a shooting incident in Carlisle County.

The incident happened after a wedding ceremony at the Bardwell Baptist Church in Bardwell, Ky.

Golightly, his mother, and other family members were in the lower part of the church getting ready to leave for the wedding reception at Columbus Park.

Golightly's mother had just walked out of the restroom when a shot rang out and she grabbed her stomach, according to the Carlisle County Sheriff's Department. She was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital.

Hayden said it did not involve a gun or a holster issued by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department.

No foul play was suspected.

Ballard County Sheriff Carey Batts posted this on the Ballard County Sheriff's Office Facebook page:

"As most of you are aware, there was a recent incident in Carlisle County which involved a Deputy Sheriff from one of our neighboring counties. The Deputy involved in this incident has a great family that has deep roots in our own community. I ask our citizens not to judge, but to pray for their family that is hurting both physically and emotionally right now and will be for a long time to come. It's easy for some to sit back and question an incident after it has happened. It would be so much easier if we could see the future so that we could change something to prevent a tragedy, which I'm sure the family will ponder the rest of their lives, but it is in times like these that we are reminded that we are only human. Again, please don't judge, PRAY for their physical and emotional healing.

Thank you,

Sheriff Carey Batts"

According to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department, Golightly had a previous unintentional discharge of his weapon on April 16, 2010. They say that shot hit another McCracken Co. deputy in the foot.
