MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -
Murphysboro high school students "Marched for Hunger" on Friday.

It's all to support area families struggling to put food on the table.

Nearly 500 students helped bring the food out to be collected by the U.S. Army Carbondale recruiting office.

Program organizer Alex Summers says he is amazed at the programs success.

“I really don't have words to describe that feeling," said Summers. "To come out here and see the United States Army, see our fire department, our Jackson county Sheriff, see our police department out here, and see just this big group of students out here who just said ‘we want to help,' So we helped.”

Half of the food donations will be given to an area food pantry while the other half will be hand-delivered to area families in need.

Summers said the program was such a success.

The Army plans to do it again next year.
