CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -
The City of Carbondale got a big boost on Friday in its efforts to revitalize the downtown area.

Carbondale has been awarded a $50,000 grant to restore downtown.  The city will have the opportunity to compete for a grand prize of $3 million in the future.

Executive Director for Carbondale Main Street Meghan Cole says the timing was perfect.

“There's a lot of momentum for downtown right now," Cole said. "You mentioned Evolve and that's one great big project, we've also had other smaller projects - kind of get excited and come on board after that. And so I think we're on a real momentum track right now, and this
only adds to that.”

Initial funding will be used toward planning and other smaller downtown projects.

Cole says she think Carbondale has a good shot at winning the grand prize.
