CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

One person had to be taken to the hospital Thursday night after a house fire in Cape Girardeau that is considered to be suspicious.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 1300 block of Good Hope Street just after 10 p.m.

When they arrived, they say smoke was coming from the first floor and basement area.

One male was in the basement, according to officials, and they were able to get him out.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance for smoke inhalation, but was in stable condition.

No one else was home at the time.

Firefighters were able to get into the basement and put out the blaze.

The entire home had moderate smoke damage, but officials say the damage was lessened by a nearby water line in which a solder connection melted from the heat of the fire.

Crews say the water helped contain the fire.

The fire started in the basement and the exact cause is unknown, according to the official fire report, but the fire is considered suspicious and is currently under investigation.
