More than $10,000 to be awarded to Missourians

MISSOURI (KFVS) -

Missourians are encouraged to enter Missouri's 529 College Savings Day Online Give away during the month of May.

The lucky grand prize winner will receive a contribution worth $5,290 to a MOST 529 account and 10 additional first prize winners will each receive a $529 contribution to a MOST 529 account.

It's designed to raise awareness and encourage Missouri families to save for college using MOST-Missouri 529 College Savings Plan.

Last year the contest had more than 10,000 entrants.

"At a time when a college education is more important than ever, tuition and other costs have become too expensive for far too many families," Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel said. "In just five years, two thirds of the jobs in this country will require some post secondary education. A little savings over time can go a long way, and awareness efforts like these are crucial to encourage Missouri families to save for college and put the next generation of students on the right path for success in the workforce."

Applications for the contest will be accepted online until May 31, 2015 at MissouriMost.org, you can also find the contest rules at the website.

You do not have to be a MOST 529 account owner to enter. The grand prize and the 10 first place account contributions will be invested in accordance with the rules of MOST 529 Plan, and the beneficiaries can use the funds received for higher education costs such as tuition and room and board.

"I am excited to again provide this opportunity, ensuring more families have a chance to win a big push towards their higher education saving goals," Treasurer Zweifel said. "It is important to remember you don't need to win a contest to start saving for college. Small, consistent investments over time add up quickly and can make a big difference for a family saving for their student's education."

More than $2 billion is invested in the MOST 529 Direct Plan by more than 150,000 account owners.
