SIU Carbondale students to hold vigil for Nepal earthquake victims

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A vigil to remember the people affected by the earthquake in Nepal is being held on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m. at the fountain in front of Faner Hall on Southern Illinois University Carbondale's campus.

A SIUC master's student in physics, Nikesh Maharjn, from Nepal's capital Kathmandu has more than two dozen family member that have been displaced from their home following the aftermath of the earthquake.

Maharjn family gathered at his aunt's home for a celebration when the earthquake broke out.

The building his aunt lives in was severely damaged and the Maharjn live in with his parents is a complete loss.

Thankfully none of his family was hurt in the quake, but his extended family has now been taken to a shelter and is living in tents on the grounds of a nearby school.

The registered student organization, Nepalese Students Society of Carbondale, has created an Earthquake Relief Fund at Old National Bank in Carbondale. Direct donations can be made directly into account number 128220963

The group is also collecting donations on campus and online through a GoFundMe account.

All funds will go to non-profit organizations and vetted relief and recovery efforts.
