SIU Carbondale to go smoke free July 1

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus will go smoke free on July 1.

The move by the university is in compliance with the Illinois Smoke Free Campus Act.

Smoking will be prohibited on all campus property including buildings, grounds, parking lots and university-owned or operated vehicles.

The university already prohibits smoking within 15 feet of any campus buildings.

The university has compiled a committee chaired by interim dean of students Katie Sermersheim to make sure the university complies with state law.

“SIU will become one of nearly 1,200 college and university campuses in the United States to adopt a 100-percent-smoke-free campus,” Sermersheim said.

The university policy on smoking, which will be finalized July 1, currently defines "smoke" or "smoking" as carrying, smoking, burning, inhaling or exhaling of any kind of lighted pipe, cigar, cigarette, hookah, weed, herbs or other lighted smoking equipment.
