Carbondale man found in dumpster with stolen merchandise sentenced for Walmart theft


A Carbondale man was sentenced to prison for a Walmart theft following a plea of guilty on March 17, according to the Jackson County state's attorney's office.

Jarvus M. Martin will serve three years in the Department of Corrections followed by one year of mandatory supervised release.

Martin was accused of leaving the store with a cart full of merchandise. Store management tried to stop Martin in the parking lot, but he refused and left. The value of the merchandise was $289.13.

Officers found Martin hiding in a dumpster behind the University Place Shopping Mall with the shopping cart and merchandise next to the dumpster. Martin taken to the Carbondale Police Station where he admitted to stealing the items.

He was charged with retail theft.

On April 29, 2015, Martin was sentenced to serve three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with one  year of mandatory supervised release. 

This is Martin's third theft related conviction, and his second conviction for retail theft.

The investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department.

Assistant State's Attorney Rebecca Blomer was responsible for the prosecution of the case.
