CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Cape Girardeau had a visitor on Wednesday, April 29 that could help pave the way with improving businesses in the city.

Margie Johnson visited with Old Town Cape and talked with business owners about what to do to keep their business thriving and fresh.

Johnson, a highly acclaimed speaker and consultant, equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills that lead them to a higher profitability and performance.

She has helped small to national business companies achieve their best performance since 1985.

Johnson said Cape Girardeau shows a lot of promise and is on course to having a great downtown.

We met up with Johnson at a meeting with economically structuring and design committees where she shared her knowledge about what she has encountered thus far in Cape Girardeau.

Johnson also shared advice in what areas to consider in revitalizing the downtown area.

One area Johnson talked about with improvements in any town is how to deal with vacant buildings.

Johnson said the key to public interest overall in thriving communities is to make the vacant building seem full or like a working business from the outside.

Another area Johnson touched on is that Main Street is not lit up well at night. She feels more storefront windows lit up would help people notice the store and talk about it rather than overlook them.

Johnson felt lit storefront windows can help boost the overall impact for the area, as well as becoming the store's own acting billboard at night.

Other areas she said that communities can benefit from include using college students to help clients with websites, designs and developments, along with having good relationships with landlords of the buildings.

Johnson also went over a couple of tips for business owners. This list includes but are not limited to:

  • Own their issues - Be vigilant day and night about your business. Johnson said this day in age is very competitive and we are seeing great new businesses and new business concepts.
  • Use online platforms - Whether it be Facebook, a website or other ways to get your name and product out there. Johnson feels a lot of businesses are using these new ways to advertise and connect with the public.
  • Be outstanding in the hospitality business - Johnson said the customer is always right and we have to obey that, advocate for that customer and treat them nice.
  • Working together - One of the reasons why revitalization is so hot right now is that sense of synergy and that downtown feeling.

If you are a business owner, or just want to hear more about Johnson's insights, a Shop Talk Workshop Overview is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at 339 Broadway Street.
