Southern Illinois Old King Coal Festival gets underway next week

The Southern Illinois Old King Coal Festival gets underway Thursday, May 7 and runs through Sunday, May 10 in downtown West Frankfort.

According to festival organizers, the event will kick off Thursday night with "Family Night" on the midway starting at 5 p.m.

The Job and College Fair will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 110 South Monroe in West Frankfort.

More than 25 employers and colleges will be on hand for the event.

On Friday the midway will open at 5 p.m. with bands starting to take the stage at 6:30.

A full day is planned for Saturday, May 9 beginning with the annual "Coal Miners Memorial Service" at 10 a.m. at the Coal Miners Memorial Park in downtown West Frankfort.

The annual service started in the 1980's as a way to honor and remember past, present, and future coal miners and to honor those that have lost their lives in the coal mines.

The Old King Coal Festival parade will be Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by events until late in the evening.

The Old King Coal Festival Car Show will be Sunday starting at 9 a.m. on the parking lot across from Frankfort Community High School on East Main.

Sunday is "Family Day" on the midway.
