OREGON COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Conservation agents found more than a dozen turkey hunters in violation during a wildlife check point.

Out of 54 turkeys inspected by agents, they say 18 were found to be illegal. Agents issued 19 citations related to turkey violations.

They say two citations were issued for taking squirrels in a closed season and failure to keep fish separate and identifiable.

Conservation agents say almost 12,000 vehicles passed through that check point in Oregon County.

Several agencies took part in the 4.5 hours it was there, including the Thayer Police Department and the Oregon County Sheriff's Department.

Missouri's turkey hunting season started a little over a week ago.
