Harlem Wizards help raise money in East Prairie

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The East Prairie, Missouri community came together on Monday night to help out high school seniors in a rather unique way.

The chamber of commerce booked the Harlem Wizards, which is a basketball team aimed at creating more smiles than putting points on the board.

All proceeds from the show will fund four college scholarships.

This is the first time the East Prairie chamber of commerce has been able to off that many.

"We have the need in our community," Chamber Director Cyndi Norton said. "When you have so many people that have applied, we saw the need and we thought we need to raise more money. So that's what we did."

The event sold out early on Monday morning.

Norton said this event allows the whole community to come together.

The Wizards travel all over to host these types of fundraisers.

Last season, the group raised more than $2 million for schools, charities and nonprofits.

"We travel all around the world putting smiles on faces with our special banner- basketball trick hoops and alley oops," show dunker Gerald "Sky-Walker" Warrick said. "We travel around and bring communities together, being role models for younger kids."

On Monday, the group was honored to help raise money for a noble cause.

"I feel great being able to do the right thing and help somebody go to college and fulfill their dreams and actually help someone in the long road of life," Warrick said. "I feel great about doing this."

The winners of the $500 scholarship will be announced next week in East Prairie.

The chamber hopes to make this an annual event.
