Heartland school raises money for Relay for Life in support of principal

MARBLE HILL, MO (KFVS) -

The Woodland school system showed their support on Monday, April 27 for Principal Howard Benyon and Relay for Life.

The school collected spare change for Relay for Life last fall, but everyone dug a little deeper after finding out Benyon was diagnosed with colon cancer a few weeks ago.

Students and teachers raised almost $1,500 extra in the last few weeks.

Four brave volunteers, including one woman, donated their hair as a reward for reaching fundraising goals.

"It's just amazing to me how these kids have pulled together," said Renee Garner with the Cardinals Crushing Cancer Relay for Life team.

"Cancer is scary, but it doesn't have to control your life, and I think I am a true testament of that," Principal Benyon said.

The public will get their chance to donate when the Relay for Life event takes place on Saturday in Marble Hill at Twin City Park from noon to midnight.
