MO veteran finds 1, still looking for other veteran from his Vietnam unit

(KFVS) -

A St. Louis Vietnam veteran turned to social media to find two men from his unit.

Because thousands of you shared our story on Facebook and online, one of those veterans has been found.

Dennis Lane said the family of Henry Patterson put the two in touch and they plan on catching up. That's 46 years of catching up to do!

Lane can't remember the second veteran's name, so he does still need your help.

The last time Dennis Lane spoke to the soldiers in is his unit, was the day he left for home in 1969, but not before he snapped a few pictures.

Today, he's trying to find these Heartland soldiers.

"In some ways it was the worst of times, but it was the best of times,” said Dennis Lane.

Lane said he still struggles with his memories from war, but some images he will never let go of.

"On my last day, I went camera crazy and took all kinds of pictures of everybody. If you were there, I took your picture,” he said.

Since returning home, Lane put those photos in a book and wrote a fictional novel titled, "Vietnam Wailing Wall," based off of the 14 and a half months he spent in Vietnam.

"All I remember is (one was) he was from Cape Girardeau …I remember he was from Paducah, Kentucky and was an all-state quarterback."

Lane wants to share in the success with his book with the men who helped him create it in real life.

"You got to know and care about these people in a way that you will never ever care for anyone ever again,” he said.

Lane said he's tried everything to find his fellow soldiers, with no success.

He said he won't give up looking.

"Your life depended on each other and you weren't sure what was going to happen to them," Lane said.

Dennis Lane will be at a book signing on May 20 from 7-8 p.m. at the Left Bank Books in the Central West End in St. Louis, Missouri.
