The Sikeston Memorial Municipal Airport is looking to build a new terminal soon.

Newly elected Sikeston Mayor Steven Burch said the city of Sikeston is replacing the airport terminal mainly to support the growth of economic development in the area.

Funds being used for this program are cost share dollars between the Missouri Department of Aviation and funds set aside for airport property in years past.

"The airport is the first impression of our community for a lot of the manufacturing distribution facilities when they come here and fly in and visit with us and look at our community," said Burch.

Burch said the Sikeston Airport is mainly used when people come to visit areas south of Cape Girardeau and down into the bootheel.

The area is exceeding development and the existing airport terminal can't keep up.

Which is why the terminal needs updating, Burch said.

He said the terminal now is in poor condition, very rundown and restroom facilities need updating.

The terminal is currently over 50 years old.

The new terminal is up for bids and allocated funds are already available.

The bids are due in by May 12.

Burch said it's important for new customers and existing customers to have a better working terminal.

"You're always wondering if they'll look down the road for expansions or further investment or other people they know. It's always a domino effect where you're trying to build relationships," said Burch.

The new terminal is expected to be built right in front of the existing terminal. Burch is hoping construction starts by Fall of 2015 and is completed by Spring of 2016.
