CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Young athletes took part in the Fourth Annual AAU Ozark Baton Twirling and Dance Super Regional competition at the Central Junior High School Gymnasium in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on Saturday.

The 61 competitors twirled and danced in front of judges in hopes to qualify for the next level.

Children from grade and high schools from Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Mississippi made the long journey to compete. Nearly two dozen participants were from the southeast Missouri area.

Kandi Staples, AAU Ozark Baton dance and cheer district director, says this sport helps these athletes in a variety of ways.

They are able to benefit from baton twirling by getting more in shape, enhancing their eye hand coordination and educates them socially
as well.

The top ten competitors in solos and the top six teams will qualify and advance to the AAU Junior Olympic Games held in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
