Storms cause hail, high winds in portions of the Heartland

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Storms on Saturday caused some damage and hail across parts of Illinois and Kentucky.

The storms began around St. Louis at noon. A tornado watch was issued on Saturday afternoon. 

First Alert weather reported more than 500 lightning strikes in a 30 minute span from around Du Quoin to West Frankfort, Illinois on Saturday afternoon. 

NWS storm reports

  • 48 mph wind gusts were reported in Harrisburg around 4:48.
  • Quarter size hail reported in Uniontown, Ky. shortly before 5:10.
  • Large tree limbs reported down in Galatia, Illinois.
  • Dime sized hail reported in Murphysboro, Illinois.
  • Zeigler had dime-sized hail around 3:42, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky.
  • Law enforcement in Raleigh, Illinois (Saline County) reported quarter sized hail at 4:20. There was also estimated up to 70 mph winds and a downed tree.
  • Quarter-sized hail was reported in Eldorado and Omaha, Illinois. 
  • Eldorado police reports a tree on a trailer and one power line down.
  • A mobile home was destroyed in Corydon, Kentucky.
  • Tree down 2 miles SW of DeSoto, Illinois.
  • Several large trees down around Hwy. 14 one mile E of Benton, Illinois.

Ameren power outages as of 5 p.m.

  • Randolph County - 7
