HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois Healthcare has announced a $23.7 million expansion to its hospital in Herrin, Illinois.

The expansion to Herrin Hospital will include seven new operating rooms, a new phase two recovery area and a new combined endoscopy and minor procedure suite.

The hospital received unanimous approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board in Bolingbrook, according to SIH spokeswoman Rosalind Rice.

“On the heels of the opening of the SIH Cancer Institute, this project demonstrates Southern Illinois Healthcare and Herrin Hospital's commitment to provide world class services and facilities locally, which allows residents to stay home for exemplary care,” Herrin Hospital Vice President and Administrator Terence Farrell said.

Rice said the demand for surgery space has risen in the area over the past decade and the new expansion will accommodate that growing need.

The number of surgeries at the hospital have increased 21 percent since 2010.

Between 2010 and 2013, the number of surgical hours increased 67 percent.

Farrell said this will expansion will likely create new jobs. While he said it's not known how many will come to the area, he did say there could soon be a greater need for surgical techs, operating room nurses, transporters, phlebotomists, and imaging staff or x-ray technicians.

Construction on the new facility is expected to begin in August 2015 and is expected to be completed by sometime in 2017.
