Put it in writing: A driving contract

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - Parents and teens who want to help put an end to distracted driving can put it in writing.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and The Missouri Department of Insurance has drawn up a contract to take on the problem.

"We all need to take responsibility for our actions when we get behind the wheel," Director John Huff said.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, 7,000 auto accidents were the result of distracted driving last spring. 17 of the crashes were deadly.

"The consequences can be dire, both financially and physically," Huff said.

It's with that thought in mind that the department is offering a driving contract for parents and teens.

The contract has a series of boxes parents and their young drivers can check off and agree to, and some of the options go beyond the road.

The agreement also has options that deal with behavior in the classroom, at home and while out with friends.
