IL lawmaker wants all state vehicles to be made in US or Canada

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) -

Illinois Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, wants all state vehicles to be assembled in North America.

All vehicles purchases or leased by the state of Illinois will be required to have been assembled in the US or Canada under a bill co-sponsored by Phelps.

“If the state needs to purchase more vehicles, then the cars should be made by workers here at home,” said Phelps. “This bill helps to support middle-class jobs in North America by keeping taxpayer money from going to overseas assembly plants in Asia, South America and Europe.”

Current vehicles would remain in use regardless of where they were made.

The bill passed the Illinois House of Representatives on Wednesday. It now heads to the Senate.
